Welcome to Dori Stickles Watercolor.

My paintings attempt to draw people’s attention to the simple and complex forms that are all around us when we go outside. I have always been a keen observer who is especially drawn to natural beauty. Time spent in nature has helped not only to ground me, but also to discover the delicate balance of the natural world. I find natural objects fascinating and enjoy the process of carefully studying them as I paint them. My work is an attempt to show my gratitude for the natural world.

I work from photographs that reveal the intricate forms often taking my breath away. I prefer seeing things up close to highlight my discoveries on treks through the mountains of Colorado or the beaches in Alaska. An accurate drawing allows me to represent the subject as realistically as possible. I especially enjoy the challenge of rendering the little details in a butterfly wing or the center of a flower. After many years of working in watercolor, I have become proficient at color mixing and the right water/paint ratio. Using several carefully planned layers, I attempt to recreate the three dimensional object on the white surface of the paper. It is a delight to see these objects emerge. While painting I listen to music that helps me to focus on the scene before me. Painting allows me to recall the joy of my initial encounters with these beautiful vistas. It is my hope that these paintings will also bring joy to others.
